Of Movies and Female Leads....

Most of my friends are aware that whenever a movie have a strong female lead, i often would pass from watching the movie entirely. Some might say that i'm too chauvinistic to even allow a woman to be the main lead (especially in action packed movies). Yeaa yeaaa... i can be a bit strong with my male agenda... but it doesn't mean that i despise female leads.

My problem, too often, with female leads in movies (especially the action ones) is that they are too obsessed in empowering the lead that they didn't even appreciate what women are. Among the usual suspect would be to create super strong and awesome lady lead who could beat the crap out of anybody and SLIT A DAMN BIG CLEAVAGE IN TIGHT SUITS. see how spiteful i am about it? yeahhh.. the women lead could add a zipper (like breastfeeding mother's clothing... lol) just in case they need to flash some sexy to get out of tight spot, but please.. don't let it all out 24/7.

Some just slap a woman face on a character that could just work with a male character (Terminator... errr.. which number was it? the one with the lady villain...you're guilty on this!!!!) and devoid of any female touch, feels. By making the character a female doesn't add anything to the story... to the character development... to no impact... and to no significance. I hate decisions to make a character a lady just for the sake of eye candy. yeaaa yeaaa... i know you'll complain... "but azam, you love eye candies".i bet tonnes of feminazi would start screaming.why are saying that it's good to sideline females from leads. deeyyy.... by nature, as a man... i like eye candy. but i know that the objectifying of women is not a good thing by brain. dudes and dudettes... i do have a brain. im not governed just by my primal instincts. contrary to popular beliefs, im not a total dick. hahahahahah

If you wanna do things right... have a strong story development of the female lead. create a dynamic character, show that the fact that she's a woman... adds to the story telling. show that the story cant't work if the lead is a guy instead of a woman. thennnnn..... you'll get a standing ovation from me (not a standing ovation while sitting down... you geddit?? you geddit right????). A fair example would be Brienne of Tarth from game of thrones. yes, im highlighting the action packed ones. there are other good lady leads but they're still within the safe zone of what defines a woman.

Yeaa yeaa... i know some of you would moan..."but Azam... she's not the main character.". dude... take a chill pill and understand. she's a POV character in Game of Thrones (GoT) and that as much as lead that any character could be in GoT. what makes Brienne a good female lead is that she is strong, with virtues of a knight, dynamic, and still believable. in my eyes she's 100% a true knight and 100% a true Lady... not just a far fetched bastardized merger of the two polar opposites.

Want an even cooler example? How about we reboot the spiderman series and replace peter parker with woman to headline her own comic? Sounds like a total sellout bullshit with another excuse to put sexy into spidey... Well it turned out we have THIS!

Spider-Gwen!!!!! yeaahh... i know... she's still in tights... but at least there's no big slit from her neck to down below. why is she called Spider Gwen?? it is because....

Because she is Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker's former flame that often died or vanished to obscurity in the many spider man universe(s). she's a version of spiderman in an alternate timeline/universe (whatever!) where instead of Peter Parker, it was Gwen that was stung by the radioactive spider. She actually met the main Spiderman(the one we all know) and this is what happened.

A role reversal... as how Peter failed to save the life of Gwen Stacy and it is the biggest regret that he had to carry.... Spider Gwen couldn't save the Peter Parker of her world and it is the weight that she had to carry. The gender switch created a new breath of fresh air and new perspectives on characters that we thought was set in stone. The writer took the whole spider-verse, tore it to smithereens, shake them up, re-organized it... and it still worked. The female spidey is awesome in her own rights.

Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa..

no 1... ummi nazira tu hot! bwahahahha memang muka dia muka melayu abis lah. so i cant imagine kalo jumpa dia kat luar and dia cakap ala2 cheerleader(almost 60% ladies speak like this) dengan segala OMG dan whatevs nya. sure rasa pelik.. hahaah

ok ok ok.... back to our real discussion. merong mahawangsa was definitely among the best malaysian films yang aku tengok lah. tak banyak pun filem tempatan yang aku angkat sebagai best. langkah besar oleh industry filem tempatan. ramai orang2 lain dah buat review pasal movie ni. good reviews ada... bad reviews ada. aku... maleh nak cerita panjang2. overall it was a great movie tapi aku nak highlight several things:-

• mano maniam(uncle chan from kopitiam) was using manglish rather than an indian accent english and it doesnt reflect Goa
• overall use of english was a bit off
• penulisan script masih sedikit mentah kerana ada lines yang tak masuk. lawak yg tak gelak. contah: "we're going to show the pirates how ugly they are". hmmm... rasa macam aku patut gelak, tapi aku tak gelak.
• kebanyakan pelakon pembantu tidak cukup menjiwai watak: awek hot goa tu paling obvious.
• depth penggunaan language masih jauh ketinggalan jika dibandingkan dengan PGL (puteri gunung ledang). you have to admit tiara was top notch. m. nasir.. takleh nak cakap apa laa.. hang tuah! dan even the gusti adipati punya acting, language-wise pun mantap!
• dissapointed dengan musical arrangement sebab sesetengah scene tu.. lagu nya tak masuk. example scene view pantai after first skirmish penuh mayat. lagunya... penuh semangat macam hero baru nak naik kuda gi lawan. WTF?? waktu credit role.. lagu epik2... tiba suddenly masuk lagu anuar zain macam edit cut and paste guna windows movie maker saja. apa tu weihh??? -_- aku expected more in terms of the musical score sebab satu... KRU kan orang music? colabo plak ngan philharmonic.. kenapa perincian secukupnya tidak diberi?
• scene bonding merong dengan marcus kat atas kapal lawan pedang tu was REALLY awkward. aku tau diorang nak buat scene ala2 'bromance'. tapi it turns out to be something cheesy and borderline gay!

yaaaa.. aku memang banyak komen.. tapi ini bukan kondem. ini constructive feedback. aku benar2 harap orang2 yang bikin movie ni baca feedback aku supaya diorang bleh improve dan bikin more movies yang bleh buat aku bangga. sila buat lagi pls? =)

Old school western revival...

aku bukannya selalu sangat review pasal filem. bagi aku best ke tak best a movie itu bergantung pada tanggapan orang yang menonton nya. tak kira lah berapa juta hujah aku highlight pasal betapa buruk/bodoh/bangang/useless nya cerita2 mo-haiiiiideen tu... tetap akan ada gak orang gi tengok kat wayang. tetap duit dia masuk gak. so buat apa abiskan air liur bercakap/penatkan jari type. betul idak? apa yang aku lebih suka adalah bincangkan isu2 atau genre2 cerita yang bagi aku interesting supaya boleh dikongsi bersama dan mungkin kamu kamu akan dapat turut berkongsi pendapat dan point of view korang. lebih berguna bukan?

waktu kecik-kecik dulu, aku sangat suka westen movie. bukan filem barat in general, tapi filem koboi lahhh.. all the gun slinging.. outlaws and 'man with no name' sangat appealing. dari dollars trilogy (fistful of dollar, for a few dollars more and the good, the bad and the ugly) sampai lah ke unforgiven... dan semestinya BUKAN brokeback mountain. smalam aku pergi tengok cerita Rango.. and yes, i went out of the cinema as one happy child. yeap, aku rasa macam im back when i was a child enjoying all those cowboy acts. tapi bukan koboi macam woody dalam toy story tu lah. cerita rango ni memang tembak tepat2 kat soft spot cerita koboi aku... and yes, sedikit sebanyak aku rindu cerita camni. skarang dah takde sangat dah cerita koboi2 yang best ni. nanti akan keluar cowboy & alien (yess koboi dengan makhluk asing) starring hans solo dan james bond (harrison ford & daniel craig). aku a bit skeptical skit bab ni... tapi tengok lah how it'd turn out nanti... tapi for the time being... im happy with Rango. and yes eventhough rango tu animated, it's not a kiddies movie. so tuan2 dan puan2.. takyah la bawak anak2 anda yang takleh handle tengok tenggiling kena gilis ngan kereta ye?

Blue pill or red pill?

well.. life is all about choices. and choices we made.. make.. or will make can never ever satisfy everybody. human relation is like a never ending-intertwined vines that would eventually hurt somebody with every move we make. gone were the days where i would put myself in the way so that i could protect other people. or at least i've increase the requirements for people to be the person that i'd take a bullet for to minimize the margin of me, myself getting hurt. with every problem, there's a solution. and god knows... solutions, served raw on the plate can never be well accepted by a lot of people. it's somewhat similar to 'the cold hard truth'. im a man of 'right now'. a man of reality. a man with the balls to just directly confront the truth. a man of solutions. a man of 'lets get it done so that we can move on to the next thing'. i try to minimize the 'what if' or even dwelling too much on dreams (dreams & goals are two different things laaa bugger!). i try not to linger for too long with issues. if i think i can do it, i'll go all the way to get it done. if i think i cant, lets just scrap it now on move on to something that i can. that's just the way i am, and that's the way i've been all these years. and here you are mr morpheus.. handing me a red and a blue pill..

House & Chuck

House and chuck season baru that keluar.. and im loving it. baru episode 2 camtu.. and seriously i love the development dalam house baru ni. dont worry.. i wont spoil it. go watch it your self. i find that gregory house is definitely somebody i could relate to. not the genius part laaa of course... broken part tu maybe lah. we're all broken to a certain extend. like how we're all not perfect. we're all a walking flaw but somehow, we need to live this life and be happy about it. hell yeahh for all the struggle and all the good moments in our life! =)

Cojones..

The A team was written and created by real men with cojones! it's so manly that women who went to the cinema watching it would feel like testosterone OD'ed and if they're not careful, they'd grow balls too.. =p seriously, it's a bad ass and asskickin' movie! if i could relate myself to any of the A team, i'd say i am 'Howling Mad' Murdock! ho ho ho so here's the old school and the new A team. both won me at hello! hell yeahhh!!!

p/s:- i pity men men who are involved with pussy/gay movies that often rained our cinemas of late (a striking representative for both would be the twillight shit hahahaha). u guys need to rediscover your cojones after all that crap! (especially you, the pretty guy playing the pussy vampire.. yes, i dont bother to even find out your real name. your glittering gayness will last forever! =p)

Puteraaa farsi dan pasir masa!

Aku rasa sekarang, penterjemah wayang sudah mula conscious dengan pendapat awam. beberapa movie yang aku tonton lately sudah tidak lagi menterjemahkan tajuk movie tersebut (yg selalunya end up jadi bahan gelak). oleh yang demikian.. 'prince of persia: sand of time' tidak diterjemahkan menjadi 'putera farsi: pasir masa'... alaaaaaaa... now they dont have any sense of humour anymore ke? tak best betul! apa2 pun... movie tersebut saaaangat mantap.. better than clash of titans and even alice. they were loyal to the franchise, the game and they were kind to the general public watching it without ever knowing the game. people may find some flaws here and there, but for me.. the movie was satisfying enough (im not that hard to please kan?).

Kaki wayang..

Clash of Titans, hmmm... cam okay gak laa... cam alice in wonderland.. i like the CGs.. the fighting and all... tapi sedikit kureng ngan dia punya jalan cerita.. COT could improve kalao diorang invest on more time.. make it a 3hours one.. mungkin best... sebab cerita nya nampak tergesa gesa. sam worthington was worth it laa.. the usual tough guy act. tapis karang aku tengah menunggu cerita ni...

aku ni bukannya a big fan of jude law sangat... tapi this one.. bagi aku must watch la... cerita pasal in the future, ada company jual mechanized organs for people.. mahal giler... and kalo ko tak mampu bayar installment, repo men ni akan datang and collect them! jude law is a repo man... been doing it like it was nothing, until.. dia sendiri eksiden.. and terpaksa pakai one of their 'product' gak.. =D

Semua orang adalah protagonist!

dalam kehidupan.. kita akan sentiasa disuap dengan pelbagai drama. setiap orang merupakan watak utama dalam sitcom/tv series masing2... (hidup aku semestinya sitcom dan bukan sinetron atau drama berbahasa spanyol) semua orang punya watak2 tetap yg sentiasa muncul... lengkap dengan lagu tema masing2(bleh tak aku guna lagu Secret Agent Man Johnny rivers?? =p) dan kadang2 bila dah beberapa musim berlalu... line up actors akan berubah. akan ada watak yg keluar dari drama (mungkin tak puas hati dengan contract baru), yang wataknya dimatikan.. atau di hiatus kan... seperti Eric dalam that 70's show tu.. sebab komitmen2 lain. mungkin juga ini semua telah ditakdirkan seperti apa yang ditulis oleh penulis pada musim pertama... tetapi kadang2.. ada juga kebetulan di mana penulis terpaksa menukar haluan cerita kerana circumstances yang tak dapat dielakkan seperti demand penonton... pelakon terlibat.. sebegitu juga siri tv kita... mungkin ada beberapa benda yg 'ditakdirkan' boleh berubah.. menjadi penulis dan protagonist at the same time kadang2 mengecewakan.. kerana expectations kita dan bagaimana cerita itu progress kadang tak selari.. mungkin selama ini kita sangkakan kristin kreuk dalam smallville tu is 'the' girl.. mungkin tiba2 lois lane akan masuk jadi the series mainstay plak.. dan kadang bila kita rasa down dan disappointed dengan diri... kita bleh saja recap episode2 yang hepi2 sket.. kalo gaduh2 ngan significant other... buat laa marathon season lepas2 to either get the fire burning balik or see kat mana u went wrong.. life is beautiful.. as beautiful as your favorite sitcom/tv series... trust me! =)

Kalau bukan kau.. aku..

Entah kenapa.. lately aku rasa cam nak share bout movies yang aku suka ngan korang semua. i'm not into rating movies or anything... just nak share benda2 yang i like.. so, kali ni.. another 'must watch' movie would be Battle Royale, movie jepun yang keluar back in 2000.. cerita ni aku tengok dengan kawan2 aku kat hostel, waktu i was still in college.. memang jadi kegilaan kitaorang lah.. (it was thaaaat long ago huh? =p)

cerita ni took another angle in the modern world.. that the world went through a great depression laa.. banyak orang jobless.. inflation.. and the youth went out of control.. so nak curb gejala ni.. kerajaan jepun(dalam cerita tu) luluskan akta battle royale ni.. problem classes were identified and bebudak tu semua were gassed and transported to an island.. semua student2 tu kena fight among themselves sampai tinggal sorang jer and collared with explosive supaya takde yg lari.. and not just that.. tgk video ni for the rules (video rules dia agak sengal dan ironically kelakar)

notice tak... cikgu diorang tu?? yeah.. u guys tak salah. mamat tu laaa pakcik dalam Istana Takeshi tu... boss besar.. owhh btw.. amaran... cerita ni penuh ngan violence.. like seriously violent. imagine, perempuan jepun kawaii comel cun... kejar and bunuh2 orang ngan sabit dengan uniform skolah.. hehehehe... well cerita ni takde laa empty and mindless sangat... banyak gak laa isu2 yg diorang sentuh among the students.. cara diorang cope dengan that reality.. 42 students semua... tgk lah bagaimana each and everyone reacted.. kalo tak dapat cari sendiri cerita ni.. datang kat aku... aku pass dalam thumbdrive... =D

over here... tribute tu awek kegemaran aku dalam movie ni... Mitsuko!! man... i wish i dated her!! =p

kepada yang tak tau... cerita ni was listed by tarantino as one of his favorite movies.. remember Kill Bill?? this is waaaayyyy better than that.. so... enjoy the movie!! =D (bagi hard core movies maybe dah tengok cerita ni already.. best kan? kan?? kan?? )

Trust me on this... cerita Avatar tu gempak gila nak mampos!! sila tengok sekarang!!! tabik james cameron.. akhirnya dapat buat sesuatu yg bleh berdiri sebelah breakthrough dalam T2. titanic? pergi laaa matiii!! hahahahhaha

i wont put anything here... pergi tengok dengan a blank mind. maybe tak sehebat tengok matrix 1st dengan a blank mind.. tapi still... movie ni definitely masuk dalam all time favorite! =D

Masa memusnahkan segala-galanya...

"Time destroys everything".. tagline movie irreversible yg aku mention dalam my previous post. cerita irreversible tu definitely one of my all time favourite and pada yang tak pernah tau... WAJIB TENGOK! it's a french movie... ada monica belluci... cerita dia pelik... bermula dari ending... kalau normal movie tunjuk sebab kenapa hero balas dendam and kejar orang jahat and then baru dapat their 'justice'... cerita ni.. kita tengok dulu hero(herokah mereka?) melaksanakan dendam dulu.. kira cam kita tatau apa sebab.. tapi orang dah start bersepai dah.. cerita ni sangat contreversial sebab graphic violence and then ada prolonged rape scene yang SANGAT real.. stok SANGAT real sampai ko rasa macam... "sudahlaaaa... jangan laa weeii... tolong la.. binatang pun tak macam ni". you will either appreciate or jelak tengok realism cerita ni.. leaving that behind, this story will definitely gets your brain thinking... the kind of movie that stays in your head... nah trailer dia..

aku telah berjaya menonton filem Angkatan Jahanam arahan Quentin Tarantino tadi.. sangat menarik, sangat moving.. and of course dengan touch Quentin yang pelik2 tu... bagi mainstream moviegoers, mungkin ini bukan sesuatu yang sesuai buat anda. especially mereka yang tak suka media violence laaa.. wuss!!! =p Tarantino fans, this is a must watch! sekarang aku tgh dapatkan versi yang tak dipotong untuk menghayati dengan lebih lanjut keganasan yang dipaparkan! Hail, The Basterds!!!

Meh layan musical dowhh...

bagi yang tak tahu, willow ni an original musical from Faculty of Education, UiTM. it was staged last year dalam bulan febuari camtu at Panggung Bandaraya, Jalan Raja Laut. it is co-written by adlan ramly and cik ana rafali, yeap... cik ana hujan bunga di kuala lumpur korang tu laa.. yang artis tu... =p

this time around, they're doing it professionally.. full scale drama production set to rock your socks off! so, kepada yang interested.. sila visit official website for the details. and the staging is for charity, bantuan kepada Tasputra Perkim, a day care training centre for children with special needs. jadi, pihak production mengalu-alukan sponsorship dari mana2 badan yang berminat.

from me... cerita ni best dowhhh... wajib tengok dowwhhh... bawak laaa gf/bf korang supanya korang nampak lebih sophisticated sket, layan musical theater and all.. hahahahah see you there! aku memang budak aliran literature, tapi tak sophisticated mana pun.. simple je.. as simple as "Jom! tengok!!!"

korang nak tau apa itu kepuasan menonton wayang? semestinya wajib weiihh korang tengok District 9 arahan Peter jackson. orang tua tu memang pandai buat cerita yang engaging and berisi. set up cerita kat johanesburg, south africa... and kalo korang bleh fikir sendiri, korang tau lah kenapa setting tu yang dipilih. as usual.. aku takkan buat review.. seriously cerita ni mantap.. itu je yang aku nak cakap.. apa2 pun.. tengok sendiri dan kemudian berfikir lah ye?? jangan sangka yg ditindas tak boleh menindas yang lain.. sape yang human dan sape yg bukan?

Terjemahan title movie di panggung...

sepanjang career aku sebagai pelawat tetap panggung wayang, ada sesuatu yang sentiasa aku 'look forward' to setiap kali movie nak start... especially movie2 english laa.. chinese dan lain2 aku tak faham.. so subtitle translation tu is what i take it as the title lah.. bagi movie2 english ni plak... para 'subbers' (bleh diguna ke eh?? sbb anime online semua pakai fansub? =p) atau pengalih bahasa di finas? lembaga filem negara? ntah.. malas nak research.. yeaahh.. mereka selalu mengambil initiative sendiri untuk menterjemah tajuk movies ye.. dan selalunya.. terjemahan itu akan menghasilkan sesuatu yang kadang sengal.. bangang dan kadang2 mempaerkan kebodohan tahap dewa... macam last time.. t4: salvation, di translate sebagai t4: pembebasan... dulu.. finding nemo, diorang translate jadi NEMO SI COMEL!! i said wtf!!! giler contextual translation tahap suka hati mak bapak punya ni.. pukul 12 pagi.. aku langkah kuar dari wayang.. puas hati! yes.. sangat puas hati. biarpun ramai yang mengatakan salvation doesn't really live up to their expectations, too many terminator movies/tv series already that the movie is a bore, cerita tu mengarut... bla bla bla.. kalo korang tak RETI appreciate the franchise, memang korang akan tergolong dalam kategori ni lah.. aku masih ingat lagi betapa berdebarnya T1.. walaupun budget tak banyak.. berjaya memberikan unsur suspense dan buat aku takut waktu kecik2 dulu.. T2, sedikit sebanyak membawa evolusi CGI in movies.. and of course, a moving and exciting storyline.. T3? err... aku faham kalo people say that T3 sampah.. aku pun saaaangat bersetuju.. T3 tu memang mengarut sampah dan tak perlu pun.. tapi terminator: pembebasan adalah sesuatu yang wajib.. boleh dikatakan susun atur sebenar(chronologically??) cerita adalah T:Salvation, T1, T2.. dan tamat... =D T3 tu kita bleh campak jauh2... hehehe aku taknak kasik spoiler.. just bgtau yang expect to see encik gabenor muncul.. terima kasih CGI sebab bleh kasik dia muda dan tak loyot macam skarang... expect Skynet yang really cunning.. expect john connor yang jauh lebih macho dari john connor T3..

last week aku gi cinema, out of my tight schedule dengan kerja lahh.. kelas masters lah.. assignments class masters lagi, aku paksa gak pergi.. nak tengok fast and furious konon. skali.. kawan aku cakap dia dah tengok so we had to watch something else (arrrrghhhhh!!!!! yeaa sampai skarang aku tak dapat tengok fast and furious lagi~!!). so we opted for Knowing. aku ada ushar trailer, nampak macam best.. dalam cinema, yeap.. so far best.. but halfway je lah... towards the end, cerita tu dah mula merepek meraban... dengan propaganda scientology dia... dengan propaganda global warming nye lagi... bullshit betul...

nak lagi best, noah's arc nye ending pulak... hahahaha CGI, top class... concept dan build up, cantek.. how they wrap it up... SAMPAH! tolooonnggg laa... noah arc's nye theme tu dah basi laa.. dalam 2 thn ni.. dah berapa movies dah pakai theme tu.. takde biblical/religious references lain kaaa yg boleh di pakai?? apa kata... somebody someone out there.. please make a movie pasal... adventures of Abraham & Lot pulak.. (nabi Ibrahim a.s & nabi Luth a.s.) sure menarik bukan?? CGI kita dah advanced, mesti the destruction of Sodom & Gomorrah cam gempak giler kann?? aku bet, filem tu mesti critically acclaimed and will tapau slumdog millionaire... dan of course menang academy awards (notice the 's' in the awards??) xD muahahhahahaha
